Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup after being denied entry to the United States for the FIFA World Cup, triggering international controversy.

Artan is one of Africa's most highly regarded football referees and has been on FIFA's international referees list since 2018.

The Somali official has built a strong reputation in continental football, including officiating the second leg of the 2025-26 CAF Champions League final. His performances earned him the CAF Men's Referee of the Year Award in 2025.

Artan was also selected by FIFA to be part of the officiating team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a milestone that would have made him the first Somali referee to officiate at football's biggest tournament.

Why Has UEFA Appointed Him to the 2026 Super Cup?

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and UEFA have jointly appointed Artan to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, scheduled for August 12 in Salzburg.

The match will feature UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain against UEFA Europa League winners Aston Villa.

The appointment comes under the framework of a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UEFA and CAF aimed at strengthening cooperation across several areas, including referee development and exchanges.

According to the two governing bodies, the partnership is guided by a shared commitment to football development and the promotion of "unity, equality and non-discrimination."

Why Did Artan Miss the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Despite being selected by FIFA, Artan was unable to participate in the World Cup after being denied entry into the United States.

According to reports, he was stopped by US Customs and Border Protection after arriving at Miami International Airport from Istanbul.

As a result, FIFA confirmed that he would not be able to take part in training or officiate matches at the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

What Reasons Did US Authorities Give?

The Trump administration stated that Artan was denied entry because of alleged links to suspected members of terror organisations.

US Customs and Border Protection said a Somali national arriving at Miami International Airport was refused entry due to "vetting concerns."

An administration official later said that the individual had been assessed as a potential national security risk.

Authorities did not publicly provide further details about the allegations.

How Did Omar Artan React?

Speaking after returning to Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, Artan described the episode as unfortunate while expressing appreciation for FIFA's support.

"What happened has happened, and it was unfortunate. I am grateful for the support FIFA gave me," Artan told reporters.

He also used the occasion to encourage young Somalis not to lose faith in their country.

"Somalia is ours, whether things are good or bad. I want to tell our youth not to lose hope in our country," he said.

Artan further added: "I am now in my country, and there is no other place I want to be."

What Was Somalia's Response?

Somalia's government expressed regret over the development and said it had attempted to engage with both the United States and FIFA to secure Artan's entry into the country.

However, those efforts were unsuccessful, resulting in his exclusion from the tournament despite FIFA's original appointment.

The case attracted significant attention because of its implications for international sports participation and because Artan had been set to become the first Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup.

Why Is His UEFA Super Cup Appointment Significant?

Artan's appointment to the UEFA Super Cup is being viewed as a major recognition of his refereeing credentials despite the setback surrounding the World Cup.

The UEFA Super Cup is one of European football's most prestigious annual fixtures, bringing together the winners of the Champions League and Europa League.

For Artan, the assignment represents an opportunity to officiate on one of football's biggest stages and reinforces the confidence that both UEFA and CAF have placed in his abilities.

The appointment also highlights growing cooperation between African and European football authorities in referee development and elite match appointments.

What Happens Next?

Artan will take charge of the UEFA Super Cup clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg on August 12.

His appointment ensures that, despite missing the FIFA World Cup, one of Africa's most respected referees will still officiate one of the marquee matches of the international football calendar in 2026.
