While you were busy relishing a high-voltage RCB vs CSK encounter in Bangalore, MMA fighter Sangram Singh was quietly scripting history for India in Argentina.

Singh became the first Indian to win an MMA fight on Argentine soil, defeating French fighter Florian Coudier in a dominant display at the Tigre Sports Club stadium in Buenos Aires.

The bout lasted just one minute and 45 seconds, with Sangram overpowering his opponent, who was 16 years younger, using his trademark wrestling techniques.

This victory also marked a hat-trick of international wins for Sangram, following earlier triumphs in Tbilisi and Amsterdam, further cementing his growing stature in the MMA circuit.

‘I either win or learn’

Reflecting on his achievement, Sangram stayed true to his philosophy, saying “Win or lose doesn't matter to me. I either win or learn. I often say that passion has no age. As the Prime Minister often says, dream high and set about making them come true. My dream of becoming the first Indian came true when I won the fight in Argentina.”

He also expressed gratitude to his long-time coach, adding that Bhupesh had stood by him for 25 years and “worked day and night” to help him succeed.

Sangram revealed he was overwhelmed by the global response, receiving a flood of congratulatory messages from India and abroad.

How the fight unfolded

The fight began with intensity as Sangram launched an early punch that narrowly missed Florian’s face, landing on his shoulder. Florian responded with a kick to the ribs, triggering a brief exchange of strikes.

Sangram later admitted, “I also had no idea why the entire stadium was cheering me on during my fight.”

Despite Florian’s speed and agility, Sangram’s wrestling pedigree proved decisive. He caught Florian’s kick, executed a takedown, and transitioned into a chokehold after attempting a “Sandi” technique.

The referee intervened after repeated checks, and Florian eventually submitted, sealing a clinical victory for the Indian fighter.

Why is this a remarkable win?

Competing in the 83 kg category, Sangram underwent a rigorous training routine, pushing his physical limits daily. His disciplined approach and strategic use of wrestling gave him a clear edge.

This was also his third MMA victory, following a 90-second win over a Pakistani opponent and another win in the second round in his previous bout, highlighting his growing dominance in the sport.
