Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has received one of the most unique tributes in modern football after his iconic overhead kick against Denmark was immortalised on a limited-edition £20 note issued by the Bank of Scotland.

The commemorative note celebrates Scotland’s dramatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026, ending the nation’s 28-year absence from football’s biggest tournament. Only 100 copies of the special note have been printed, making it one of the rarest football-inspired collectibles linked to the tournament.

The Goal That Changed Everything

McTominay’s spectacular bicycle kick came in the third minute of Scotland’s decisive World Cup qualifier against Denmark at Hampden Park in November last year. The stunning strike helped set the tone for a memorable 4-2 victory in Glasgow.

The match ultimately became one of the defining nights in modern Scottish football history. Scotland sealed qualification with two stoppage-time goals in front of more than 50,000 fans, triggering emotional celebrations across the stadium and the country.

McTominay’s acrobatic effort quickly became symbolic of Scotland’s qualification campaign and is now regarded by many supporters as one of the greatest goals scored for the national team in recent years.

Why the Note Was Created

The limited-edition banknote was produced in collaboration with McTominay and Scottish illustrator Katie Smith. According to the official announcement, only 50 of the notes will be made available to supporters through a prize draw and charity auction.

The initiative also carries a charitable purpose. The Bank of Scotland confirmed that proceeds from the auction will support Crisis and its campaign to end homelessness in Scotland by 2040.

One of the auction packages will additionally include exclusive memorabilia connected to McTominay.

McTominay Calls Tribute “Incredibly Special”

McTominay described the tribute as “incredibly special”, adding that Scotland’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup meant everything to both the players and supporters.

The 29-year-old midfielder has continued to strengthen his reputation in European football since joining SSC Napoli in 2024. He is now viewed as one of Scotland’s most influential players heading into the World Cup in North America.

Scotland’s World Cup Challenge Ahead

Scotland will begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Haiti on June 13 in Group C. They will then face Morocco and Brazil in what promises to be one of the tournament’s toughest groups.

For Scottish supporters, however, McTominay’s famous overhead kick has already secured a permanent place in the nation’s football folklore — and now, quite literally, on its currency.
