QUICK TAKE | Seven Things to Know About India–Pakistan’s 8.4 Million World Cup Ticket Requests

1. Why is India–Pakistan in the news?
The ICC says their 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup group match has received 8,397,294 ticket requests. Scheduled for October 10 at Johannesburg’s Wanderers, the fixture has drawn even more requests than the final, highlighting the rivalry’s enduring pull almost a year before the tournament.
2. How crowded is the queue?
The Wanderers holds about 34,000 spectators. Dividing the requests by that capacity gives roughly 247 requested tickets for every seat. That measures demand, rather than an applicant’s precise odds: the full stadium capacity is not necessarily the allocation available through the public ballot.
3. Does that mean 8.4 million people applied?
No. Fans can request up to four tickets per match and enter ballots for multiple fixtures. Across the tournament, the ICC reports 2.8 million unique fans from 193 countries, more than 32 million match registrations and over 120 million ticket requests. These figures measure different things.
4. Can fans still enter the ballot?
Yes, until November 21, 2026. Registration at tickets.cricketworldcup.com is free, with no payment required initially. Entries are considered equally regardless of when they arrive during the window. For oversubscribed matches, a random ballot determines who receives an opportunity to purchase. Entry alone guarantees no ticket.

5. Is demand concentrated on this rivalry?
It extends well beyond it. The final at the same ground on November 21 has attracted 7,900,944 requests. Zimbabwe–India in Victoria Falls has received more than 3.3 million. South Africa’s fixtures, including pre-seeded Super 7 matches, account for nearly 26 million requests.
6. When does the World Cup actually begin?
October 2, 2027, with a preliminary three-team Super Series in Namibia. India face Australia in Cape Town on October 7 to begin the group stage, revisiting the 2023 final. South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will co-host 57 matches across 12 venues.
7. How does India’s route to the final work?
India share Group A with Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and a qualifier. The top three from each six-team group, plus the best fourth-placed side, reach the Super 7. Those seven play a full round-robin; the leading four advance to the semi-finals.
