1. Has the rain-delayed match started?

Yes. Light drizzle delayed the toss at Eden Park, but play subsequently began. Shubman Gill chose to field, citing overcast conditions and the advantage of knowing the target if weather forces a reduction. New Zealand opened with Tim Seifert and Will Young.

2. How long has India’s winless run lasted?

India last won an ODI in New Zealand on February 3, 2019, beating the hosts by 35 runs in Wellington to complete a 4–1 series victory. Since then, they have lost four matches there, with another two washed out.

3. Does Eden Park offer much comfort?

India have won three of their ten ODIs against New Zealand at the Auckland venue. Its short boundaries can reward aggressive batting, but India’s immediate task is to use the overcast conditions with the new ball before those dimensions become a headache.

4. What is India’s biggest selection call?

Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav miss out. India have selected Arshdeep Singh, Anshul Kamboj, Auqib Nabi and Gurnoor Brar as their four specialist seamers. Axar Patel and Naman Dhir provide additional bowling options, giving Gill a markedly pace-heavy combination.

5. Why are Rohit and Kohli back in focus?

The senior batters return for their first ODI appearance since the home series against West Indies ended on October 3. Gill captains a batting order that also includes Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper KL Rahul. This series gives that combination an extended overseas examination.

6. Who are New Zealand missing?

Devon Conway suffered concussion in a training collision with Matt Henry and misses the opener. Seifert replaces him. Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman are unavailable for the series through shoulder and hamstring injuries respectively. Henry also does not feature in the opening XI.

7. Why does this series matter beyond Auckland?

Gill has linked the conditions to preparations for the 2027 World Cup, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. There is a leadership transition ahead too. Gill and Rahul will miss the final two ODIs to prepare for the Tests, with Iyer taking over the captaincy.
