Who was Neeraj Yadav, the Asian Para Games gold medallist?
Yadav’s sporting journey began against considerable physical challenges. Diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis at the age of seven, he initially pursued wheelchair tennis before switching to para-athletics around 2015. He competed in the F55 category, which includes seated field events such as javelin, discus and shot put.
His breakthrough came at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, where he won gold in the men’s F55 javelin with a throw of 29.84 metres, setting an Asian record. Five years later, at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games in 2023, he added two more gold medals, winning in javelin and discus.
Yadav also earned medals at international para-athletics competitions, establishing himself as a prominent figure in India’s field-event contingent. His achievements made him one of the country’s notable para-athletes.
Why did Neeraj Yadav miss the 2026 Asian Para Games?
Yadav was absent from the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, after being placed under a doping suspension. The development marked a difficult period in his sporting career.
Satyanarayana referred to Yadav’s absence from the competition while speaking to PTI, but cautioned against drawing conclusions about the reasons for his death. No verified evidence has established a direct link between the suspension and the tragedy.
What do Delhi Police say about the investigation?
According to the police account provided to the media, Yadav was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Delhi Police have initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and are investigating the circumstances. The postmortem examination was expected to help establish further details. Police had not announced a final conclusion at the time of publication.
Yadav’s death has prompted renewed attention to the pressures athletes can face when sporting careers are interrupted. His record remains one of achievement and perseverance. The circumstances of his death, however, are still under investigation.
