The much-hyped visit of football icon Lionel Messi to Kolkata has spiralled into a major controversy, with event organiser Satadru Dutta filing a formal complaint against former West Bengal Sports Minister Arup Biswas.
The complaint alleges misconduct, including ticket misuse, unauthorised access, and pressure tactics during the high-profile event at Salt Lake Stadium.
The Kolkata leg of Messi’s “GOAT Tour” was expected to be a landmark sporting event. Instead, it descended into chaos after Messi left early, leaving thousands of fans disappointed.
Angry attendees, many of whom had paid premium prices, began throwing bottles and attempting to breach security barriers. Reports of vandalism followed, with some trying to damage stadium infrastructure, including tents and goalposts.
The unrest escalated to the point where police had to use mild force to disperse the crowd.
At the centre of the controversy is Satadru Dutta’s complaint, which raises serious questions about event management and external interference.
“I have come here to file the complaint against the Sports Minister and against his relatives. Furthermore, regarding certain high-ranking government officials and former government officials who entered the venue and specifically regarding the police's failure on that day. The Sports Minister Arup Biswas, who took ticket from me, I suspect he sold them in the black. He subjected me to severe threats regarding the issuance of access cards,” Dutta said.

He further questioned how unauthorised individuals gained entry despite controlled access systems.
“Even after I refused to provide the access cards, people still managed to enter the venue. How did they get in? I have filed a complaint covering all these specific grievances... I will file a lawsuit seeking damages amounting to Rs 50 crore and I will file a separate defamation suit... They made a scapegoat out of me. The investigation must be unbiased,” he added.
The incident has sparked debate over large-scale event planning in India, particularly when high-profile personalities are involved.
Fans alleged that VIPs and political figures dominated access to Messi, leaving paying attendees without even a glimpse of the football legend. This perceived imbalance added to the frustration and triggered the backlash inside the stadium.
Security lapses and crowd control failures have also come under scrutiny, especially given the scale and expectations surrounding the event.
With formal complaints now filed, the matter could move into legal and investigative territory. Dutta has indicated plans to seek ₹50 crore in damages and pursue a defamation case, while demanding an impartial probe.
The controversy has not only overshadowed Messi’s visit but also raised broader concerns about accountability, transparency, and crowd management in mega sporting events in India.
