Major League Baseball (MLB) has strengthened its push into the Indian market by appointing India captain Suryakumar Yadav as its ambassador and extending its media partnership with JioStar. The twin announcements are aimed at expanding baseball's reach through fan engagement, original content, live broadcasts and strategic collaborations.

Suryakumar to spearhead baseball's outreach in India

MLB on Wednesday announced that India's T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav will serve as an MLB Ambassador, working on fan engagement initiatives, original content and marquee events designed to introduce more Indian sports fans to baseball.

Known for his innovative and aggressive batting, Suryakumar has emerged as one of the leading faces of modern T20 cricket. Through the partnership, he will participate in MLB events in both India and the United States, including MLB All-Star Week in Philadelphia from July 10 to 14.

The collaboration will also see him create original content with MLB while highlighting the similarities between cricket and baseball, with the objective of making the sport more accessible to Indian audiences.

Speaking about the partnership, Suryakumar Yadav said, "One of the best things about sport is that it brings people together, no matter where they're from. I'm excited to partner with Major League Baseball and be part of its journey in India. I look forward to learning more about the game myself and helping more fans discover the energy, excitement and culture that make baseball something else."

Alongside the ambassadorial announcement, MLB confirmed the renewal of its partnership with JioStar, ensuring continued live coverage of MLB games and programming for Indian audiences across television and digital platforms.

Under the renewed agreement, JioStar will remain MLB's official broadcast partner in India, carrying marquee events including the MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard, select regular-season fixtures and the postseason, culminating in the World Series.

The partnership complements MLB's broader strategic alliance with RISE Worldwide Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited, which is focused on supporting the growth of baseball in India.

MLB eyes long-term growth in India's sports market

MLB said the combined reach of RISE Worldwide and JioStar provides access to one of India's largest sports and entertainment ecosystems, creating fresh opportunities for fan engagement through content, live broadcasts and on-ground experiences.

Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB Senior Vice President of Global Operations and Events, said the partnerships represent a significant step in the league's India strategy.

"India is home to one of the most vibrant sports cultures in the world, and these partnerships allow us to connect with fans in a meaningful way," Yolkut said.

"Suryakumar is one of the most recognized athletes in India, with an ability to connect with millions of fans across the country. Combined with our renewed partnership with JioStar, we are building a powerful foundation to further expand baseball's reach throughout the country."

The latest agreements build on MLB's ongoing efforts to grow the sport in India through expanded media distribution, year-round fan engagement programmes and strategic partnerships aimed at introducing baseball to a wider audience.
