Mumbai Indians finally ended their 14-year drought of winning IPL openers with a commanding six-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
MI had never chased down a 220-plus target in their previous seven attempts, but Hardik Pandya and his team did it with authority in their IPL 2026 campaign opener.
Rohit Sharma led the charge with a scintillating 78 off 38 balls, while Ryan Rickelton smashed 81 off 43.
The duo put together a 148-run partnership for the opening wicket in just 72 balls, setting the platform for a dominant chase.
Ryan Rickelton, reflecting on his performance, said, “Pretty good for me. Didn't have the best week's preparation coming into this, but to go out there and find the middle of the bat quite early on with Ro was something really special.”
KKR entered the game with a severely depleted bowling lineup. Vaibhav Arora and Blessing Muzarabani struggled to make an impact, Varun Chakravarthy was ineffective, and Sunil Narine was a shadow of his former self.

Despite these challenges, KKR managed a competitive total of 220 for 4, their second-highest against MI in IPL history.
Ajinkya Rahane contributed a fiery 67 off 40 balls, while local talent Angkrish Raghivanshi added 51 off 29.
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane acknowledged the learning curve for his side. The 37-year-old batter was forced to walk off the ground with a visible limp during the run chase.
The veteran leader had to abandon his fielding duties due to what initially appeared to be severe cramps.
“I mean, just a lot of cramps. It was really tough. I thought 220-225 was a good total. We batted really well, but again, the inexperienced bowling attack. Playing against Mumbai Indians, strong batting lineup, it's really a learning curve for us,” the KKR captain said during the post-match interview.
“Apart from Vaibhav, Karthik, Muzarabani, who haven't been used to IPL, two experienced spinners, but I thought Mumbai Indians batted well. So our bowlers will definitely learn,” he said.
Shardul Thakur made an immediate impression on his MI debut by picking up three wickets, but MI faced little difficulty chasing down the target, finishing with five balls to spare.
The game highlighted MI’s aggressive approach from the start. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton mirrored KKR’s own attacking mindset during the powerplay, putting immense pressure on an inexperienced KKR attack.
Both batsmen reached fluent fifties, leaving MI in control well before the halfway mark.
Rohit’s innings ended with a superb catch by Anukul Roy in the deep, but Rickelton continued to maintain the momentum.
MI lost a few wickets along the way, but the foundation laid by the opening pair ensured the chase remained under control.
Bowling from both sides was largely ordinary, but Shardul Thakur’s three wickets and Jasprit Bumrah’s tight overs at the death made the difference.
