Harry Kane continued his record-breaking run on football's biggest stage with a match-winning brace against DR Congo in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. The England captain became just the second player to score 20 or more goals across the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship, joining Cristiano Ronaldo in an exclusive club while adding several more milestones to his remarkable international career.
England booked their place in the Round of 16 after Kane struck twice in the final 15 minutes to secure a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo in Atlanta.
The African side had taken an early lead through Brian Cipenka in the seventh minute and controlled large stretches of the contest. However, Kane turned the match around with goals in the 75th and 86th minutes to send England through.
According to Opta, Kane has now scored 20 goals across the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship, with 13 coming at World Cups and seven at the Euros. Only Portugal great Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more across the two tournaments, with 24 goals comprising 10 at the World Cup and 14 at the European Championship.
The England skipper also strengthened his reputation as one of Europe's most decisive performers in knockout football. Since Euro 2020, Kane has scored 10 knockout-stage goals across major international tournaments, including the World Cup and Euros. Kylian Mbappe follows with seven, while Dani Olmo, Kasper Dolberg and Goncalo Ramos have three each.

Kane's brace also saw him move ahead of Brazilian legend Pele in FIFA World Cup scoring, taking his tally to 13 goals—one more than the three-time World Cup winner.
The 32-year-old also surpassed Geoff Hurst's four World Cup knockout goals to move into second place among England players with five. Only Gary Lineker, with six knockout goals, remains ahead in that category. Kane has already gone beyond Lineker's overall World Cup tally of 10 goals.
England will now face Mexico in the Round of 16 at the iconic Azteca Stadium on July 6, with kickoff scheduled for 5:30 AM IST.
