Hardik Pandya for Arshdeep Singh? How an IPL Trade Works Before the Auction

Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings are reportedly moving towards a swap ahead of IPL 2027. How would the deal work, what could it do to their auction purses, and who bowls Arshdeep’s overs if he leaves Punjab?

Why is a Hardik–Arshdeep IPL swap on the table?

In the third over at the Wankhede on April 16, Arshdeep Singh removed Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar went for a duck. It was also the over in which Arshdeep reached 100 IPL wickets. Later in the innings, Shreyas Iyer took the catch that dismissed Hardik Pandya. Punjab chased down 196 with 21 balls to spare.

By November 7, those three players were at the centre of a different story. Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings had reportedly submitted expressions of interest in a deal that would send Hardik to Punjab and Arshdeep to Mumbai. The clubs have reportedly agreed to the swap, subject to BCCI ratification, and that Hardik was willing to play under Iyer.

Why would the teams do this before the auction?

If Mumbai released Hardik, it would free up space in its squad and budget. Mumbai would then have to find a replacement from whoever became available. A trade lets Mumbai ask Punjab for Arshdeep specifically, even while he is under contract. Punjab can deal directly for Hardik, too. Both can go into the auction knowing which other positions they need to fill.

Can the players say no?

Yes. Under the trading process, an expression of interest reportedly starts the formal process, the player must sign a consent form and the BCCI receives the paperwork. A swap involves two players, so both have to agree. The clubs can reach an understanding while the approvals and contracts are still being sorted out. That is the gap between an agreement reported by sources and a trade announced by the IPL.

Where does the money go?

Start with the league fee, the amount the player is contracted to earn for the season. That fee counts against the receiving team’s cap. Under the BCCI trading provisions, any separate payment from one franchise to another sits outside that cap. The two published league fees, therefore, tell us how a swap might affect the auction purse. Any additional cash between clubs is a separate question.

Mumbai retained Hardik for ₹16.35 crore ahead of IPL 2025. Punjab brought Arshdeep back for ₹18 crore by exercising its right to match the auction price. If those fees carry over and this is a straight swap, Mumbai would use ₹1.65 crore more of its purse and Punjab would free up the same amount, all else equal. Those are calculations based on published fees. The terms of this proposed trade remain undisclosed.

Can a player’s salary change in a trade?

Yes. In June 2026, the IPL announced that Rishabh Pant would return to Delhi Capitals from Lucknow Super Giants at a revised fee of ₹15 crore, down from his ₹27 crore auction deal. Kuldeep Yadav went the other way at his existing ₹13.50 crore fee. The trade announcement is where we’ll learn whether Hardik and Arshdeep move on their existing fees or on revised terms, if the IPL publishes the fees.

Why would Mumbai want Arshdeep alongside Bumrah?

Think about who bowls the third over and who bowls the 19th. Arshdeep can take the new ball, giving Mumbai a left-arm angle alongside its right-arm quicks. With Arshdeep available early, Mumbai could save more of Jasprit Bumrah’s four overs for later. When a match calls for Bumrah up front, Arshdeep can still bowl at the finish. Both are Indian players, so picking them together leaves Mumbai’s overseas places available for other roles.

Arshdeep took 14 wickets in 14 matches for Punjab in 2026, seven in the first six overs. He went at 10.21 runs an over across the season. Mumbai, which finished ninth, would be trading for someone who can cover two difficult parts of an innings. It would also have to replace the middle-order batting and seam overs that Hardik provided.

Why would Punjab give up its leading wicket-taker?

Hardik gives Iyer the option of an Indian middle-order hitter who can also bowl seam. If Hardik can bowl regularly, Punjab could add a bowling option without giving up a batting spot. There is also some overlap with Marcus Stoinis, who scored 216 runs for Punjab in 2026. Hardik could give the team more room to choose where it uses an overseas place. That depends on his role and how much he can bowl.

Punjab finished fifth in 2026 and would be giving up its leading wicket-taker. Arshdeep bowled 28 of its powerplay overs in 2026 and took four wickets in overs 16 to 20. Marco Jansen offers left-arm pace, and Vijaykumar Vyshak has already bowled at the end for Punjab. Giving them more of that work would change how the team uses them elsewhere. Hardik bowled 22 overs and four balls across 10 matches for Mumbai last season, taking four wickets. Punjab would need a plan for the new ball and the finish even on nights when Hardik can give Iyer only an over or two.

How did Hardik end up in another trade?

In the 2022 final, Hardik took 3 for 17 and scored 34 as Gujarat Titans won the IPL in their first season. He took them back to the final the following year. Mumbai traded to bring him home ahead of IPL 2024 and made him captain in place of Rohit Sharma, who had led the franchise to five titles. Mahela Jayawardene described the handover at the time as part of keeping Mumbai “future-ready”.

Hardik won 22 of the 31 IPL games he captained for Gujarat and 15 of 39 for Mumbai. Mumbai reached Qualifier 2 in 2025, between a last-place finish in 2024 and ninth in 2026. It has since promoted Kieron Pollard to head coach. If the swap is approved, Mumbai will have a new coaching group and a captaincy vacancy to fill. Punjab, meanwhile, would be asking the man Mumbai brought home to lead to help Iyer win games from the middle order.
