Cabo Verde bowed out of their maiden FIFA World Cup campaign after a heartbreaking 3-2 extra-time defeat to defending champions Argentina, but the tournament will be remembered as much for the island nation's fearless performances as for the extraordinary exploits of 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who emerged as one of the breakout stars of the competition.

A World Cup debut that defied expectations

Statistics alone cannot capture the impact of Cabo Verde's remarkable World Cup journey. Although they exited the tournament without registering a victory, the African nation consistently punched above its weight to reach the Round of 32 in its debut appearance.

Cabo Verde opened their campaign with a goalless draw against defending champions Spain before holding Saudi Arabia and two-time world champions Uruguay. Those three draws secured an unlikely place in the knockout stages.

Their Round of 32 clash against Lionel Messi's Argentina became one of the tournament's most compelling contests. Cabo Verde twice came from behind to level the score at 2-2 and pushed the reigning champions into extra time before an unfortunate own goal by Diney Borges handed Argentina a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Despite their exit, Cabo Verde finished the tournament with four goals scored, five conceded, three draws and one defeat. They also remained unbeaten in regulation time against three world champions — Spain, Uruguay and Argentina — underlining their ability to compete with football's elite.

Vozinha's remarkable numbers steal the spotlight

If Cabo Verde discovered a global football icon during the tournament, it was veteran goalkeeper Vozinha.

The 40-year-old produced a string of outstanding performances that quickly made him a fan favourite, even as his popularity on social media surged throughout the competition.

He made seven saves against European champions Spain before producing arguably the performance of his career with eight saves against Argentina, according to ESPN FC.

Overall, Vozinha registered 18 saves during the tournament. According to OptaJoe, only two goalkeepers aged 40 or above have recorded more saves in a single FIFA World Cup — Peter Shilton, who made 28 for England in 1990, and Dino Zoff, who recorded 27 for Italy in 1982.

Among all goalkeepers at the tournament, only Paraguay's Orlando Gill (19) and Curacao's Ely Room (20) finished with more saves than Vozinha.

Messi shines as Argentina survive major scare

Cabo Verde began brightly in Miami, testing Argentina through Ryan Mendes before the South American champions gradually established control.

Messi broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, expertly controlling Lisandro Martinez's diagonal pass before firing into the roof of the net. The strike was his seventh of the tournament, moving him to the top of the Golden Boot standings.

Cabo Verde responded strongly after the interval. Ryan Mendes set up Deroy Duarte, who finished confidently from a tight angle to score his country's first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout-stage goal and restore parity.

Vozinha continued to frustrate Argentina with a series of superb saves, particularly denying Messi repeatedly as the contest stretched into extra time.

Argentina regained the lead in the 92nd minute when Lisandro Martinez converted from close range following a corner. Cabo Verde refused to surrender, with Sidny Lopes Cabral curling home an outstanding effort from a tight angle in the 103rd minute to make it 2-2 once again.

The decisive moment arrived in the 111th minute when Messi's corner found Cristian Romero, whose powerful header deflected off Diney Borges and into the net for the unfortunate own goal that ultimately settled the contest.

Cabo Verde almost forced a penalty shootout in the closing moments, but Emiliano Martinez produced a crucial save to keep out Lopes Cabral's powerful free-kick and send Argentina through.

Argentina will now meet Egypt in the Round of 16, while Cabo Verde depart the tournament with widespread admiration after one of the most memorable debut campaigns in FIFA World Cup history
