Ecuador erupted in celebration after securing one of the biggest results in the country's football history, defeating Germany 2-1 to qualify for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The landmark victory prompted President Daniel Noboa to declare a national holiday, hailing the team's resilience in overcoming criticism and adversity to achieve a memorable milestone.

Noboa Announces National Holiday After Historic Achievement

In a post on X, Noboa praised the squad's determination and announced a nationwide holiday for Friday.

"Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough times they went through, managed to bounce back and bring this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow, holiday! Long live Ecuador," he said.

The result completed an impressive turnaround for Ecuador, who entered the decisive Group E clash after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and being held to a goalless draw by Curacao. Facing an already-qualified Germany side, Ecuador were widely considered underdogs but delivered a performance that will be remembered for years.

Ecuador Fight Back After Early Germany Lead

Germany struck first with their opening shot on target. Florian Wirtz supplied Leroy Sane inside the penalty area, and the forward calmly guided his finish into the bottom-left corner beyond goalkeeper Hernan Galindez.

The goal, however, sparked immediate controversy as Ecuador players appealed for a foul in the buildup, claiming Aleksandar Pavlovic's high boot had made contact with Pedro Vite before the move continued.

Rather than allowing the setback to derail them, Ecuador responded with confidence and aggression. Their reward arrived in the ninth minute when Nilson Angulo capitalised on a loose ball in midfield and unleashed a powerful long-range effort that beat Manuel Neuer and brought the scores level.

The remainder of the first half saw Ecuador grow into the contest, pressing effectively and disrupting Germany's rhythm while creating opportunities on the counterattack.

Plata's Winner Seals Ecuador's Place in History

The decisive moment came in the 77th minute from a corner on the right flank. Kevin Rodriguez won a crucial header and flicked the ball across goal, where Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest to poke home from close range.

The goal triggered jubilant celebrations among Ecuador's players, coaching staff and supporters, but the closing stages were far from comfortable. Germany pushed relentlessly for an equaliser, throwing numbers forward and applying sustained pressure deep into stoppage time.

Ecuador's defence, however, held firm through seven additional minutes, preserving a famous 2-1 victory and securing passage to the knockout rounds.

The achievement marks only the second time Ecuador have advanced beyond the World Cup group stage, equalling the feat they first accomplished in 2006 and writing a new chapter in the nation's football history.
