Belgium coach Rudi Garcia expressed frustration over his team's inability to convert chances after they were held to a goalless draw by Iran in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G clash in Los Angeles. Despite controlling large spells of the match and creating several opportunities, Belgium failed to find a breakthrough against an inspired Iranian side led by goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.

Garcia rues missed opportunities

Speaking after the match, Garcia said Belgium should have secured a comfortable victory but paid the price for their wastefulness in front of goal.

"We could have won by three goals against Iran but we weren't efficient enough. We had many attempts and when you don't score, you don't win a match. We dominated, so tactically and in terms of the game plan we played as we wanted to play. But we were wasteful and lacked efficiency," he said.

Belgium enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, dominating possession and creating the clearer chances. Maxim De Cuyper tested Alireza Beiranvand from distance early on, while Iran remained threatening on the counterattack.

Iran thought they had taken the lead in the 24th minute when Mehdi Taremi converted a cleverly-worked free-kick routine. However, a VAR review ruled the striker marginally offside, keeping the scores level.

The Belgian attack continued to press throughout the first half, but Beiranvand produced a string of important saves to deny Garcia's men and ensure Iran reached the interval unscathed.

The game swung dramatically in the 66th minute when Belgium defender Nathan Ngoy received a straight red card for bringing down Taremi after a costly defensive error left the Iranian forward through on goal.

Garcia acknowledged the challenge his team faced after being reduced to 10 men.

"Playing 30 minutes down a man is very difficult in a World Cup," he said.

The dismissal, the eighth red card of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, forced Belgium to adopt a more cautious approach as they reorganised defensively.

Iran unable to capitalise as Group G remains wide open

With a numerical advantage, Iran pushed forward in search of a decisive goal, introducing fresh attacking options and increasing pressure on the Belgian defence.

Despite creating several late opportunities, the Iranians were unable to find a breakthrough, while Belgium held firm to secure a point.

The stalemate leaves Group G finely balanced. Iran remain top of the standings on two points, with Belgium second on the same tally. New Zealand and Egypt are both on one point, ensuring the race for qualification remains wide open heading into the next round of fixtures.
