At 39, Messi had reached another milestone that seemed almost too neat for a career already overflowing with them.

The Argentine scored his 100th goal for Inter Miami in the 24th minute of the Campeones Cup final against Cruz Azul on Wednesday, helping his side win 2-0 and lift the trophy. He later provided the corner from which Casemiro headed in Miami's second goal.

And with that, two stories collided in the same night: Messi's remarkable longevity and Inter Miami's extraordinary transformation since he arrived in Florida.

The number is striking even before you add the trophies. Messi became the first player in Inter Miami's history to score 100 goals, reaching the landmark in just 115 appearances across all competitions. His goals have come at a remarkable rate: 11 in 2023, 23 in 2024, 43 in 2025 and 23 so far in 2026.

That is the part of the Messi story that can be easy to overlook. He arrived in South Florida in 2023 at an age when most footballers are already being asked questions about how much longer they can remain at the top. Messi's first goal for Inter Miami also came against Cruz Azul, in the 2023 Leagues Cup. His 100th came against the same opponent, three years later, in another cup competition.
