Asian Games 2026: Kumkum Mohod’s Historic Gold Leads India’s Nine-Medal Archery Haul

South Korea’s Oh Yejin shot an eight. Kumkum Mohod answered with a 10.
That shoot-off sealed India’s first individual recurve archery gold at the Asian Games and made the 17-year-old from Amravati the standout name in a campaign that delivered nine medals and Olympic qualification breakthroughs.
Indian archers finished Aichi-Nagoya 2026 with five gold, two silver and two bronze medals, matching their record haul from Hangzhou 2023. According to Olympics.com, archery delivered more gold medals for India than any other sport or discipline at these Games.
India reached the podium in nine of the 10 archery events, including all five recurve competitions. Kumkum alone collected three medals: individual and women’s team golds, and mixed team silver alongside Dhiraj Bommadevara.
TWO PERFECT SETS AND A HISTORIC FINISH
Kumkum’s route to the individual title included victories over some of the strongest names in the field. She defeated South Korea’s reigning world champion and Olympic medallist Kang Chaeyoung 6–3 in the quarter-finals, then beat China’s Zhu Jingyi 6–2 to reach the final.

Against Oh, she had to recover repeatedly.
The Korean won the opening set 29–27 before the second finished level at 29–29. Kumkum responded with a perfect 30 in the third, but losing the fourth left her trailing 5–3 on set points.
She needed to win the fifth to stay in contention. Another perfect 30 took the match to 5–5 and forced the shoot-off, where her 10 settled the contest.
Before Kumkum’s breakthrough, Tarundeep Rai’s silver at Guangzhou 2010 had been India’s only individual recurve medal at the Asian Games.
Reaching the final also secured a women’s individual recurve quota place for India at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The quota belongs to the country; Kumkum’s participation remains subject to selection.
NEERAJ WINS ALL-INDIAN BRONZE CONTEST
India’s men also reached the individual recurve podium, although both contenders missed the final and the Olympic quota places available to the finalists.
World No. 1 Dhiraj Bommadevara, who topped qualification, lost 7–3 to South Korea’s Lee Wooseok in the semi-finals. Neeraj Chauhan went down 7–1 to Japan’s Junya Nakanishi.
That set up an all-Indian bronze-medal contest, with Neeraj prevailing in a tight finish. He carried a one-point advantage into the final arrow and matched Dhiraj’s closing 10 to secure the medal.
Earlier, Dhiraj had beaten Uzbekistan’s Amirkhon Sadikov 6–2 in the quarter-finals, while Neeraj defeated Bhutan’s Lam Dorji 7–1.
India finished the recurve programme with two gold, two silver and one bronze medal, securing a podium place in every event.
CHIKITHA’S DOUBLE GOLD, COMPOUND’S OLYMPIC BREAKTHROUGH
The compound archers contributed three team golds and a men’s individual bronze, with Chikitha Taniparthi playing a central role in two title victories.
Chikitha joined Jyothi Vennam and Prithika Pradeep in the women’s team final, where India defeated China 238–234. The winning score also matched the world record.
She then partnered Sahil Jadhav to beat South Korea in the mixed team final. That victory brought another gold and secured India a historic Olympic quota place in the compound mixed team event for LA 2028.
India also won the men’s compound team title. The women’s individual compound competition was the only archery event in which the country missed the podium.
NINE MEDALS, WITH AN EYE ON LOS ANGELES
The final tally matched Hangzhou’s nine medals, but Aichi-Nagoya also delivered new milestones: India’s first individual recurve champion at the Asian Games, medals across the entire recurve programme and quota places for the next Olympics.
Kumkum’s three-medal campaign and Chikitha’s double gold gave the contingent two prominent young contributors alongside its established names.
For Kumkum, the defining moment came down to one arrow. Her 10 completed a comeback, secured a title and gave Indian recurve archery a new benchmark.
