Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Christina, has also developed the same addictions
Pop singer Whitney Houston died in the bathtub of Suite 434 at Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles last week. The singer with the strong, soaring voice, who also acted in the film Bodyguard, was only 48.
Despite her talent and success, Houston had always been dogged by unhappy times. Her tumultuous marriage with rap singer Bobby Brown and her alcohol and drug addiction plagued her for much of her short life, and ruined her prized vocal chords too. She had admitted that her drugs of choice were cocaine and marijuana, and allegedly there were prescription pills like Xanax and Valium also found in her hotel room that night. New reports suggest that she took the pills and went in for a bath, but fell asleep and drowned.
The drug problems started more than a decade ago. In 2000, Hawaii airport guards discovered marijuana in Houston’s and her husband’s luggage. Charges were dropped later, but the drug use rumours continued. She was allegedly also dropped from singing at the Academy Awards because of her erratic behaviour.
In 2002, in an interview with Diane Sawyer, Houston admitted to using cocaine but said she never used crack, as she made “too much money to do crack. Crack is whack.” In 2007, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said she often used drugs with her husband, who liked lacing “marijuana with rock cocaine”.
Unfortunately, Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Christina, has also developed the same addictions. A day before her mother’s death, Bobbi was found asleep in the same position in a bathtub. She was rushed to a hospital. Since Houston’s death, Bobbi has suffered two anxiety attacks and is feared to be suicidal.
