Foreign secretary Vikram Misri clarified before a parliamentary panel that India had informed Pakistan about the strikes in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack only after the first attack on the terrorist camps, and not before.
The clarification comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ‘s allegations that foreign minister S Jaishankar had informed Pakistan ahead of ‘Operation Sindoor’. The ministry of external affairs had dismissed the accusations as “misrepresentation of facts”.
Misri was briefing the Parliamentary standing committee on external affairs on foreign policy developments in the light of the India -Pakistan military conflict, in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
The meeting, chaired by Congress’ Shashi Tharoor, was attended by 25 members of the committee, including Rajeev Shukla and Deepender Hooda from Congress, Trinamool Congress’ Abhishek Banerjee, BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad, Aparajita Sarangi and Arun Govil, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and CPI (M)’s John Brittas.
When asked about Trump’s post on X,
Misri told them that neither was US President Donald Trump involved in the ceasefire, nor was he informed of the modalities. He said
it could be that Pakistan may have informed him.
He said the ceasefire was arrived at after the Pakistani DGMO called his Indian counterpart and discussed cessation of military action. Misri told the panel that it was evident that there was a nexus between the terrorists and the Pakistani administration.
The members of the Committee condemned the attack on social media on Misri, after he announced that India and Pakistan had agreed on cessation of military operations on May 10. The condemnation got wholehearted support from BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad. Misri, who got an extension in November last year and retires in July, 2026, had to block his X account because of the trolling.
The government has announced plans to send all-party delegations to 33 capitals across the globe to present India’s strong position on countering terrorism.
