India on Thursday carried out a series of drone hits in Pakistan after the latter tried to attack 15 different locations in India overnight. India’s counter-attack has neutralised the air defence system at Lahore according to a government release.
“These (Pakistan attempts) were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence Systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attack,” the release said.
Locations such as Awantipora and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai and Bhuj were attacked using drones and missiles. The list shows almost all major districts in Punjab and two key military areas in J&K—both housing important military bases—were attacked by Pakistan.
This marks a significant escalation by Pakistan after the Indian attack on terrorist locations in that country. Pakistan also shelled the Poonch and other areas in J&K in the past two days leading to a number of civilian fatalities and serious injuries to dozens of people living there. 16 people were killed, including three women and children due to Pakistani firing.
The release noted that Pakistan has increased the intensity of shelling across the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar and Rajouri sectors.
In its briefing on Wednesday morning and through multiple other messages, releases and briefings, India had made clear that its response to the Pahalgam atrocity was non-escalatory in nature and did not target Pakistan’s civilians and military targets. It also said that India did not want to escalate further but would respond if Pakistan chose to escalate.
Pakistan has clearly chosen not to read India’s message. It deliberately chose military targets across North and Western India but these attacks were repulsed.
