The Indian Air Force did not target Kinara Hills near Pakistan’s Sargodha air base, which reportedly houses a part of the country’s nuclear arsenal, and this does not figure on the list of targets released by India, director general air operations Air Marshal A K Bharti said on Monday.
The clarification was significant since the social media and news sites are abuzz with reports that strikes on the Kinara Hills sites may have caused a radioactive leak and the targeting of the nuclear facilities might have been a prod for United States to intervene in the conflict.
“Thank you for telling us that Kinara Hills houses some nuclear installation, we did not know about it. We did not hit Kinara Hills, whatever is there. I did not (mention Kinara Hills) in my briefing yesterday,” said Air Marshal Bharti.
The categoric denial will cool speculation of Pakistan’s nuclear assets having come under the shadow of Indian attacks on its military establishments. The over cooked reporting and analysis even claimed that a special flight had brought in chemical element Boron which is allegedly used to contain leaks.
Raising doubts about the safety of the nuclear arsenal plays to the Pakistan copybook that often seeks to create apprehensions of an atomic confrontation in the minds of western leaders. Invoking the nuclear threat is almost a reflexive response to bridge the gap in conventional forces.
