Search has been the biggest revenue generator of Google ever since the company was launched. It was the entry gate for all its other pathbreaking products that made it one of the biggest multinationals in the world, and Search remained its monopoly. But then OpenAI launched ChatGPT and brought the generative artificial intelligence (AI) era into the hands of people. Google responded with its own AI products like Gemini but Search had not been integrated because you don’t touch the goose that lays the golden eggs without due consideration. That point has finally reached.
Alphabet’s chief executive officer Sunder Pichai announced on May 20 at Google I/O 2025, the company’s annual developer conference, that Search would now have AI woven into it. He said, ‘For those who want an end-to-end AI Search experience, we’re introducing an all-new AI Mode. It’s a total reimagining of Search. With more advanced reasoning, you can ask AI Mode longer and more complex queries. In fact, early testers have been asking queries that are two to three times the length of traditional searches, and you can go further with follow-up questions. All of this is available as a new tab right in Search. I’ve been using it a lot, and it’s completely changed how I use Search.’
It has already been rolled out in the United States and the rest of the world would follow soon. There were also other announcements related to AI made at the event. A 3D video conferencing platform called Beam will roll out soon by which people on a call can see 3D images of the person at the other end. An app that makes short videos based on text prompts is also coming. Google’s AI assistant will now be able to perform tasks like making dinner reservations or buying tickets, making it agentic.
