This model from Canon is a serious camera, built around a brand new 18-megapixel sensor, an impressive new viewfinder, Dual Digic 4 Processors, and 8 frames per second continuous shooting capability.
When I picked up the camera to try it out, the first thing I noticed was a brilliantly improved button layout, and the excellent build quality ( I am told the body is made of magnesium and is dust and weather resistant). Picture quality is perfect with a great amount of sharpness, and low noise levels on pictures taken in lower light conditions. A short cut button lets you choose between Raw or Jpeg modes for capture of images.
The 19 Point Auto Focus lets you capture the trickiest of pictures. You can choose all 19 to be active or only the ones you want.
The back of the camera sports a 3 inch screen that is bright and handles glare nicely. Also incorporated is a brand new level gauge that operates on both horizontal and vertical axes, thus letting you align the camera for that perfect shot. The built-in flash can wirelessly control other Speedlite flash guns for studio shoots. The display is big and easy to read settings off. A large thumbwheel on the rear lets you control the settings easily.
The camera also supports Live View, and as you change the settings and your AF controls, you can see them all on the screen. This feature helps you take better pictures. The EOS 7 D also comes with a PC software with which you can remote control the camera.
For those of you on the professional side, the camera sports a Sync Port for Canon Speedlites and a port for Canon’s remote control. The camera also has a combined USB and TV output, and a mini HDMI connector, as well as an external microphone connector in case you choose to shoot movies with this camera.
