Restaurateurs in Vijayawada gathered last week to better a Guinness world record for the longest masala dosa. All of 38.2 feet long, their dosa eclipsed the previous mark set by an Ahmedabad restaurant at 32.5 feet in 2009. Over 30 cooks toiled for days before creating south India’s favourite export. According to one of them, Ram Mohan, they practised on a specially-made 55 foot long hot plate fired by 12 separate LPG cylinders for several days for the big event. Their attempt was recorded by a Guinness Book of World Records adjudicator who noted that the batter for the dosa was evenly spread over its entire length at 1.5 cm thickness and folded thrice in perfect synchrony by the chefs. Mohan said that the trickiest part was to give the dosa three long folds to resemble a giant masala dosa. “This is why we had to practise to get the timing right.”
