Till now, the ‘Out of Africa’ migration was dated to 60-70,000 years ago. But a new study has sought to push that date back by nearly 60,000 years. Researchers from the University of London and University of Tuebingen, Germany, have found stone tools in the United Arab Emirates’ Jebel Faya region that were made about 125,000 years ago. Dr Mike Petraglia from the University of Oxford, while working at sites in India, had unearthed tools that could have been made by modern humans more than 60,000 years ago. These were found under the layers of ash that poured out from the Toba super-volcano, which existed 74,000 years ago. As for Jebel Faya, it’s uncertain whether the region was a transit point or destination for settlers.
