Finally, here is a sensible verdict: India’s Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe of the admission and recruitment scam in Madhya Pradesh—Vyapam as it is called, by the short name of the state-run Vyavsay Pareeksha Mandal in the eye of the scandal—with the death of yet another witness coming to light. This move should put an end to the trial by media. The Supreme Court, which directed the CBI to probe all cases of the scam and multiple deaths allegedly related to it, also issued notices to the Centre and the state on a plea seeking Governor Ramnaresh Yadav’s removal for his alleged involvement in the scandal. The court also issued a notice to the Governor. Opposition parties claim that 49 people associated with the scam have died of unnatural causes so far.
Before handing over the investigation to the CBI, the apex court took on record the submission of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who, on behalf of the MP government, said the state had no objection to a free and fair probe.
