Even as the US hectors the rest of the world on going green, Discovery reports that the US army is the world’s most polluting organisation. It consumes $18 billion worth of oil alone every year. Its strike tank, the formidable M1 Abrams, gives an average of a quarter of a kilometre per litre and can burn up 38 litres an hour even if it’s standing still. If the US army were a country, says Discovery, it would be the world’s 38th largest polluter. This is more than the Philippines which has a population of 90 million.
