Bhagalpur’s famous tussar silk is set to become an exclusive brand with its registration entering the final stage of the Geographical Indications (GI) Act for patenting. “The three rivers that flow through Bhagalpur—Ganga, Kosi and Champanala—lend the right kind of moisture for the silk to be processed. That’s what sets Bhagalpur silk apart,” says Dhananjay Kumar, an official with the Bhagalpur Handloom Cluster. With a lot of fake tussar silk fabrics doing the rounds in the country, weavers are hopeful that the patent will help customers differentiate. “Hopefully, this patent will boost the market for Bhagalpur silk,” adds Kumar.
