Scientists are now simulating the sun’s power. Well, almost. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has developed the most powerful laser in the world, capable of simulating the energy force of a hydrogen bomb or even the sun. The laser system took over a decade to develop and costs over $3.5 billion. The aim: to achieve controlled as well as sustained nuclear fusion. It will require the world’s fastest supercomputer to crunch all the numbers that the experiment needs. This is as big as it gets in the world of big science.
