When it started a Bachelors in applied sign language, Indira Gandhi National Open University didn’t anticipate the demand. Applications poured in from India and abroad. “We haven’t been able to accommodate even 1 per cent,” says PR Ramanujam, director of Ignou’s Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education. Of the 1,000 applications, only 30 were selected. “We got five applications from other countries, but only four were able to join,” he says. “We want to admit more students once we get more teachers,” he adds.
