After the ink attack on Sudheendra Kulkarni and the forceful cancellation of a Ghulam Ali concert in Mumbai, the Shiv Sena continues with its hooliganism by opposing the Indian cricket team’s participation in Pakistan’s home series scheduled for December.
Shiv Sena activists reportedly broke into the office of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where BCCI chief Shashank Manohar was present along with his Pakistani counterpart Shahryar Khan. After the break-in, they shouted anti-Pakistan slogans and held banners demanding that the Pakistani officials leave India.
The Shiv Sena is part of the coalition government in Maharashtra and its series of recent protests is becoming increasingly embarrassing for the BJP. The Pakistan home series is part of a pact between the Indian and Pakistani cricket boards for six bilateral series between 2015 and 2023. India has not played a bilateral Test series against Pakistan since 2007. The Shiv Sena has a history of aggressive protests using cricket as an excuse, even digging up a pitch once in protest. While it gives the party great publicity, this time it has also put the series under threat. For cricket lovers, that is not a good thing.
