Shimla’s ice skating rink, the only such naturally-formed rink in Asia, is going strong at 90, and continues to go from strength to strength each year. Set up in 1920 by Irish military officer Blessington, the rink is considered a landmark among speed skating and figure skating enthusiasts across the globe. In fact, earlier this week, professional skaters from all over the country got to whiz across its smooth surface as part of a three-day national championship. More than 75 skaters from 12 states participated in three categories: sub-junior, junior and senior. The place buzzed with excitement, and competitors raised their game. “There were participants from America, Muscat and Abu Dhabi as well. The high standards practised by these foreign participants inspired our budding skaters to put in their best as well,” says Ice Skating Club secretary, Bhavnesh Banga.
