The Kerala High Court has finally asked the question that people have been debating after a stampede at Sabarimala left 102 pilgrims dead. The Court demanded of the board that manages the hill shrine a clarification on what was behind the ‘celestial light’ or Makarajyothi that day. By some accounts, the stampede occurred because pilgrims crowded an unsafe route to get a better view of the light. That it takes the death of over 100 pilgrims for the Travancore Devaswom Board to allow examination of the source of such a tragedy is another tragedy.
