The Modi-led Government got an opportunity to turn an embarrassment into an excuse for a full-fledged confrontation. The opposition made history of sorts in the Rajya Sabha by getting an amendment to the motion of thanks to the President’s address passed. This is the fourth time in Rajya Sabha’s history that such an amendment was passed.
The amendment was moved by CPM leaders Sitaram Yechury and P Rajeeve. ‘There is no mention in the address about the failure of the government to curb high level corruption and to bring back black money,’ read the amendment. M Venkaiah Naidu tried to dissuade Yechury from moving the amendment who said normally he would accept such a request, but he was pressing for it as the Government left no choice as even after 14 hours of debate, the opposition was denied an opportunity to seek clarifications on the Prime Minister’s reply.
But then, all this would give the NDA more vigour to convene a joint session of Parliament to push crucial reform bills.
