Opposition parties accused the Assam CM of disrespecting the tricolour and insulting the nation, when he cut a cake with the Indian flag as the icing.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Especially if the icing is green, white and saffron with a blue Ashoka chakra on it. Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, who smilingly shared and savoured a piece with Governor JB Patnaik on 26 January, has been left with a bad taste in his mouth after images of the ceremony were beamed on local channels. Opposition parties accused Gogoi of disrespecting the tricolour and insulting the nation. Gogoi’s office was forced to issue a note stating the CM ‘regretted’ cutting the cake. The flag code is silent on a cake with the national colours on it. Assam’s Congress leaders contend the brouhaha is ridiculous. “What about the many dishes that have the three national colours? Like baked fish with spinach and sliced carrots? Would it be anti-national to eat that?” a senior Cabinet minister wondered.
