The Government of India, in collaboration with IIT-Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Thiruvananthapuram, are developing a mobile-like device that would help women and the elderly trigger alarms in case of trouble. The device would also signal pre-identified cellphone numbers when necessary. The e-governance department of the Department of Electronics and Information and Technology has awarded the project a grant of Rs 50 lakh. IIT-Delhi is expected to bring out a prototype model for the device by January 2014. IIT-Delhi and C-DAC had been specifically asked to create a prototype that would be affordable to India’s masses.
