A spelling howler has already made this Chilean 50-peso coin, apparently circulated in thousands in 2008, a numismatist’s delight. Instead of C-H-I-L-E, the coins have C-H-I-I-E embossed on them. Two officials at the Chilean mint have been fired following the discovery of the error which was not until late 2009. Chileans, who have been hoarding the misprinted coins, are finding the blunder amusing rather than a jilt to their national pride. Quality and service, they say, were never a forte of the Chilean government.
