Karnataka is all set to change over to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).
Karnataka is all set to change over to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). It has an action plan to make the state incandescent bulb-free from January 2011. A study by the Energy Department revealed that switching over to CFLs would save 400 MW per day in the power-starved state. To make the programme a success, the government has decided to sell CFL bulbs at a fraction of the cost to BPL families. The first such initiative was launched at a slum in Gulbarga, a north Karnataka city, on Monday. These CFL lamps have been priced at just Rs 15 per piece and will be made available through the public distribution system. The subsidy programme, titled Belaku (light), hopes to encourage people to buy these power-saving bulbs. The CM has requested all citizens to switch over to CFLs in their homes and establishments. The state has earmarked Rs 100 crore to subsidise the buying of CFLs, a minister said.
