The National Museum plans to set up a thousand ‘People’s Museums’ across the country.
From the ground up, museums can often seem like vast, intimidating buildings with little connection to daily life. Now, in a bid to bring rural communities closer to these cultural institutions, the National Museum is planning to set up a thousand ‘People’s Museums’ across the country. As part of this initiative, villagers will be encouraged to bring in their traditional heirlooms for display at these museums, which will be housed in schools and colleges. The exhibits could range from walking sticks and farming tools to traditional attire and photographs. People will no longer need to travel miles to visit a museum; they can simply visit one in their own village.
The first such ‘People’s Museum’ has been recently inaugurated in Kerala’s Mannanam village. Housed in a school, the museum opened with an exhibition of digital prints of art works and artifacts from the National Museum.
