Abbas Kazmi, the lawyer of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab has been sacked as trustee of the Islam Gymkhana for defending the terrorist accused of killing at least 72 people in the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. Though Kazmi’s name was recommended by the Bar Council on the directives of the special designated court set up to try the accused, the lawyer has drawn flak from all quarters. Kazmi’s sacking by the president of the Gymkhana Zakauallah Siddiqui has drawn sharp criticism from some other members of the prestigious club. Though the Gymkhana which is caught in its own internal problems has maintained a silence since the action, it has found a strange friend—Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. Praising the bold action of the Gymkhana, Thackeray stated that if all Muslims behaved and lived in this manner there would be no quarrel with them. ‘Islam Gymkhana has set an ideal and has displayed nationalism,’ wrote Thackeray in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna. When contacted, Siddiqui’s secretary stated he was too busy to talk to Open.
