Job-hunting has become simpler in rural Karnataka. Notices for vacancies are going to come right into people’s cellphones. The Karnataka government is using technologies like IBM’s Spoken Web to inform villagers about employment opportunities. According to an official IBM statement, this project is a powerful example of infusing societal trends with technology to solve problems in growth economies. People with little or no literacy can access, share information and perform business transactions using mobile phones. The information generated as part of this ‘Smarter Employability Platform’ project will be in the local language and will be implemented in two districts, Mandya and Bijapur to begin with.
