Naturalist Shrikant Ingalhalikar has come up with a database on Sahyadri biodiversity that can be downloaded onto a cellphone

Nature lovers need no longer arm themselves with bulky encyclopaedias while making a trip into the wilderness. All they need is a cellphone. Pune-based naturalist Shrikant Ingalhalikar has come up with a novel database on the biodiversity of the Sahyadris that can be downloaded on the cellphone. Titled Id Sahyadri, the database will be less than 2 GB in size and is available at a paid website.

“This mobile field guide satisfies the need for instant field identification while watching something new in the wild,” says Ingalhalikar, who has been studying nature for the past 30 years. The guide contains information about 2,265 species of flowering plants, birds, butterflies, snakes, geckos, turtles, frogs and mammals. Priced at Rs 4,000, the database will be available from August.
