On Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary this year, the anti-GM lobby observed a National Fast Day to protest against Bt Brinjal.
A few years ago, after the movie Lage Raho Munnabhai, Gandhigiri and roses became the thing to make a point. Now the rose has given way to the humble brinjal. On Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary this year, the anti-GM lobby observed a National Fast Day to protest against Bt Brinjal, which is in the course of being cleared by the Government. On the other hand, Greenpeace is planning to make the world’s biggest baingan bharta in Delhi using 20,000 brinjals. “The World’s Biggest Baingan Bharta will be served to thousands of poor and hungry in Delhi and, at the same time, persuade Jairam Ramesh to save the brinjal,” says the NGO. Whether or not the Government listens to the anti GM lobby, 20,000 natural (read genetically non-modified) brinjals will be martyred for the grand dish. Who’s going to eat it, though—those who went on fast?
