A cutout of Sadhvi Pragya as a saviour on a Dussehra greeting banner in Mangalore, Karnataka, was swiftly pulled down by the police after locals complained. The sadhvi is the prime accused in the Malegaon blasts case and is currently behind bars in Maharashtra. The offending banner, with a shloka from the Bhagavad Gita, was found by morning walkers in Ullal near Mangalore. The city is a communal tinderbox. According to the police, there was no need to investigate the matter as it seemed like a prank and no outfit had claimed responsibility for it.

Prank or not, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties is clearly unimpressed. A PUCL spokesperson says the banner was put up deliberately by the Hindutva brigade to provoke minorities. He also flayed the police for brushing the incident under the carpet as the state is under BJP rule right now.
