For the residents of Chandigarh, the world just became a better place to live in. Good news comes on three wheels.
No longer will residents of Chandigarh have to haggle endlessly with auto drivers or waste precious minutes waiting for a suitable mode of transportation. Auto rickshaws will now be a phone call away with the newly launched radio auto service Tuk Tuk. Launched on 10 August this year by the State Transport Authority (STA), this service is the first of its kind in the country. The fleet boasts of unique bubblegum pink autos that run on LPG and sport a state-of-the-art global positioning system. The choice of colour is to help passengers differentiate them from other autos. “People can avail this service by 1 September. We thought that if buses and cars can have GPS, then why not autos. The drivers are being specially trained to use this system,” says Vandana Disodia, secretary, STA. The residents of the city have welcomed this new service. “Auto is a common man’s public transport. I am quite looking forward to see these pink beauties on the road,” says executive Shivangi Singh.
