The venue of a recent state-level conference of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) in Kerala was decorated with pictures of revolutionary leaders, among them Jesus Christ. The Syro Malabar Church accused the CPM of ‘hurting religious feelings’ and jeered that since Marx and Lenin were not able to attract people, the party had turned to Christ. CPM Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan retaliated, saying Christ was one of the great revolutionaries of history. A few days later, the party put out a poster featuring an adaptation of The Last Supper, with Barack Obama as Christ, flanked by Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, LK Advani and Oommen Chandy, among others, as his disciples. Its title: Last Supper of Capitalism. Paul Thelekkat of the Synod of Catholic Bishops called the use of The Last Supper to make a political point “wrong”. But this time, Vijayan issued a statement saying that the party did not know about it.
