Nearly 40 years after the UAE gained independence, the Indian government addressed decades of NRI grievances by persuading the UAE to protect the rights of Indian workers. According to the agreement, employment contracts for migrant workers will be made tighter. But this came with a caveat. According to PTI, the UAE’s labour minister said that “Indian authorities get to scrutinise” terms of contracts between employers and employees. It was unclear if the agreement covers pre-existing contracts of non-resident Indians, and whether it would have any tax implications.
