Different cultures teach unmarried girls to protect their virginity. Now, it seems teenage boys, too, like to wait for Ms Right, unlike the popular virginity myth that they’re likely to jump into bed with the first girl willing to have sex with them. Of hundreds of boys aged between 14 to 21 interviewed about male virginity, 28 per cent claimed they were depressed after giving their virginity to a girl they found did not care about them. The girls only wanted sex or the bragging rights to claim they had bagged a virgin. A few boys reported losing their virginity to girls who mistook their body’s normal arousal reactions as consent. The boys had negative emotions after the event.

The question is, what is worse—this, or being the subject of mockery for being a virgin? Virginal teen boys are looked upon as sissies by their peers. With girls becoming more sexually aggressive, it is often assumed that boys are living it up. Yet, the teenagers interviewed reported they were confused by the saturation of sex in society and yearned for a return of romance. The researchers feel it is not healthy to assume that boys are basking in the joy of easy-to-get sex. Nor is it healthy to assume that boys can’t wait to shed their virginity to just any girl.
