Winslet is the latest to show herself off bare-faced on the red carpet, a look also favoured by Madonna and the like in recent times. Not surprisingly, everyone’s wondering how she conjures up this au naturel look. Well, for starters, quite a lot of the natural look comes out of jars, bottles and tubes. And to look convincing, it actually takes a Hollywood closet full of cosmetics. Her picture-perfect look is the result of considerable buffing, polishing and painting done for hours. At a premiere in New York, when Winslet stepped out with her hair scraped back into a tight ponytail, it was dubbed by London dailies as the ‘Croydon face-lift’ since it lent her a youthful charm and cut back her years. The actress, who at any given opportunity tries to play down her curvaceous figure, fitness and beauty, is obviously not admitting to any of the creams and lotions that make her look even better. She does adhere to the term beauty secrets quite literally and it’s working for her, for now at least. That’s what you call keeping one’s powder dry.
