Social networking sites seem to have set off a fresh national security concern. The Army has ordered its personnel not to post information on Facebook, Orkut and Twitter. A circular issued by the Army is said to have ordered that all service-related information be immediately deleted from the sites. There is concern that location and posting details of servicemen could lead to leak of sensitive information to enemy agents. There is also the possibility of Army personnel being befriended by such agents through Facebook and Orkut. This, however, is not the first time the Army is said to have issued circulars on social networking. Under the ‘good order and discipline’ rules of the Army Act, violation of the order could result in imprisonment for up to seven years. According to the same circular, nearly 35,000 of its 1.1 million personnel are active Internet users.
