Bharati Devi has become a legend of sorts in northern West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. This 40-year-old is all set to appear for a secondary examination along with her daughter, Sanchita. For the women in her village, the mother of three has become a symbol of empowerment. One of her admirers is Aparna Bagchi, principal of Sunitibala Sadar Girls High School. According to Bagchi, Bharati never lost her enthusiasm for education even though she was forced to quit school at a very early age. Now she can be seen working hard on her studies with Sanchita, who is also married.
